Appel à communication sur Varron, APA 2015 (1er avril 2014) – New Orleans, USA

The Intellectual Legacy of M. Terentius Varro: Varronian Influence on Roman Scholarship and Latin Literary Culture

APA TLL Fellowship Committee
146th Annual Meeting in New Orleans
Organizer: Matthew McGowan, Fordham University (mamcgowan@fordham.edu)

This panel invites contributions exploring the influence of the works of Marcus Terentius Varro (116—27 BCE) on the development of Roman scholarship and Latin literary culture. In recognition of the great breadth of Varro’s scholarly and literary production—now mostly fragmentary or completely lost—we have intentionally left our parameters for submission broad, although we are keen to receive abstracts that treat the Varronian tradition. We encourage, in particular, submissions that address the issues and ideas developed in contemporary scholarship reassessing Varro’s scholarly works as more than merely descriptive of Roman cultural practices and intellectual life in the Late Republic. In the areas of religion, education, farming, and linguistics, for example, Varro’s voluminous output —viz. Antiquitates, Disciplinae, De re rustica, and De lingua latina—is now readily viewed as deeply formative for a new cultural identity virtually coinciding with the arrival of the Principate at Rome. Potential contributors might consider how Varro was read at Rome, or in what ways he helped to reformulate Romans’ understanding of their traditional institutions, or whether other authors followed or disputed his antiquarian methods.

Accordingly, this panel welcomes contributions from diverse approaches assessing the intellectual legacy of Varro—“the most learned of Romans” (Romanorum eruditissimus, Quint. inst. 10.1.95)—across a variety of genres and subjects: lexicography, technical treatises, grammar, etymology, linguistic theory, and literature in prose and verse. The papers here will build on the Committee’s very successful seminar, “Varro, De Lingua Latina, and Intellectual Culture in the Late Republic,” held at the APA’s 2014 meeting in Chicago.

Please send your anonymous abstract (of no more than 650 words, excluding bibliography) for a 20 minute paper as a PDF attachment to the APA office at apameetings@sas.upenn.edu, by April 1, 2014. Please indicate in the body of your e-mail the title of this panel, complete contact information, and any audio-visual equipment requirements. Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously. Authors should follow the formatting guidelines for individual abstracts provided by the APA, including the removal of details that might reveal the author’s identity. All proposals must be submitted by April 1st.

CFP: The Problematic Text: Classical Editing in the 21st Century

Organizers:
Tom Keeline (Harvard University)
Justin Stover (All Souls College, Oxford)

E. R. Dodds once remarked that our classical texts were good enough to live with; D. R. Shackleton Bailey is said to have replied, “That depends on your standard of living.” That was some 50 years ago—what is the state of classical editing today? Textual criticism and editing have long been regarded as central to classical scholarship, but do they still have a place in the year 2015? How does traditional textual criticism overlap and interact with other established and emerging fields of classical studies, such as papyrology, reception studies, digital humanities, and literary theory? What possibilities for editing classical texts are provided by new technologies like computer-assisted recension, electronic text corpora, manuscript digitization, and digital editions? This panel seeks to showcase new work in textual scholarship that demonstrates the field’s ongoing importance to contemporary research in classics. Papers on Greek or Latin texts from Homer through the end of antiquity discussing new and recent editorial work, emendations, theoretical or practical problems of editing, the relationship between critical edition and commentary, prospects and possibilities for future editions, and the opportunities and challenges of editing in the digital age will all be welcome. Taken together, the papers presented will demonstrate the continued vitality and importance of textual scholarship in terms accessible to a general audience of classicists.
